Happy Thanksgiving

The staff of the Valparaiso Community Library would like to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving. Our library will be closed November 24th and  25th in observance of the holiday. Normal hours will resume on Monday.

Halloween Party

Checkout our latest set of pictures from our Halloween party and story time. Chelsea and Emily planned and organized a Halloween themed story time for our youngest patrons and their moms. The children also enjoyed crafts and halloween treats such as cookies, apple cider, and of course, candy!

New Book Discussion Groups

The Valparaiso Library will be offering two new book discussion groups beginning in November.  Each book discussion group is open to the public.

The first group will be called the Constant Readers and will meet on Thursday, November 3rd at 10:30 to review the novel “The Great Man” by Kate Christensen.

The second group will be called the Mystery Lovers.  This group will meet on Thursday, November 10th at 10:30 to review “Booked to Die” by John Dunning.

Participants are urged to attend regularly, but are welcome to choose sessions that will meet their schedules.  Discussions will be informal with Jill White serving as the group moderator. Selections will be determined with an eye to a monthly theme or the works of a particular author. For additional information call the library at 729-5406 or visit our website at http://vcl.valp.org.

Need free tutoring?

Our library is offering free tutoring sessions in Mathematics and Science for Grades K-5.  However, any student (Grades K-12) struggling with math or science can participate in our free tutoring program.  Each tutor session will be held in the library conference room on Mondays from 3:00 – 5:00.  No appointments are necessary.  Please email or call the tutor directly with any questions about the free tutoring program.

Final Summer Movie

Join us on Tuesday, August 16th at 2:00 for our final summer movie. We are showing the Disney film Mars Needs MomsAll ages are welcome to attend.  Complimentary popcorn for all attendees.  See you at the Tuesday Movie!


Writer’s Block

The library will be hosting a performance-based writing workshop beginning Thursday, July 7th at 1:00. This interactive program will focus on self expression, creative writing, improvisation, and weekly activities. This informal program consists of group discussions, poetry readings, and friendly critiques in the hopes of developing written or vocal narrations. All ages are invited to attend.

Summer Reading Program 2011

Looking for fun, educational, and interactive activities for children this summer? Each year, our library offers a variety of free summer vacation programs for school aged children.  This summer’s reading theme “One World, Many Stories“ is designed to enhance creativity and educate children about diverse cultures. The summer program schedule begins on Monday, June 6th and concludes on Monday, August 1st. Below is a listing of scheduled dates and program descriptions.

Mondays from 2:00 – 4:00: One World, Many StoriesChildren, and parents alike, will enjoy multicultural stories, short films, and creative activities.  The programs will focus on a different Country or Region each week.

Tuesdays from 2:00 – till: Tuesday Movie Day - Join us for newly released movies shown in our new ”movie theater” which features state-of-the-art equipment such as a high-definition projector, wide projection screen, and surround sound audio system. Children, tweens, individuals and families are welcome to attend.

Discarded Book Sale

Checkout the book sale at our library. Books for sale include fictional works, how-to-guides, and military history to name a few.

We are also selling complete book collections such as Ocean World of Jacques Cousteau, Macmillan’s Encyclopedia of Science, Encyclopedia Britannica and many more.
